GnosisDAO to Retire L1 and Pivot to Ethereum ZK-Rollup; 27% GNO Supply Unlock

GnosisDAO has approved a major strategic pivot to transform Gnosis Chain from a standalone Layer 1 into a ZK-proven Ethereum rollup. This transition will retire the network's independent validator set and unlock 350,000 GNO tokens, representing roughly 27% of the total supply.

GnosisDAO members have officially approved GIP-153, a landmark proposal that marks the end of Gnosis Chain as an independent Layer 1 blockchain. Under the new roadmap, the network will transition into a zero-knowledge (ZK) rollup, becoming a core component of the 'Ethereum Economic Zone.' This shift involves retiring its sovereign validator set and settling directly to the Ethereum mainnet on every block, effectively outsourcing its security to Ethereum’s robust validator network.

This move reflects a broader industry trend where legacy Layer 1s are repositioning as Layer 2s or 'app-chains' to capture Ethereum’s deep liquidity and security. By adopting ZK-proof technology, Gnosis aims to enhance transaction privacy and scalability while simplifying its technical architecture. However, the transition necessitates the decommissioning of the current staking mechanism, leading to the release of 350,000 GNO—over a quarter of the circulating supply—into a liquid state.

For investors, the immediate concern is the potential for increased market volatility as these newly unlocked tokens become available for trade. While the move significantly strengthens long-term Ethereum alignment and technical viability, the massive influx of GNO could create substantial short-term sell pressure. Traders should closely monitor GNO exchange inflows and the specific timeline for the ZK-rollup implementation, as successful execution could redefine Gnosis as a premier infrastructure hub within the Ethereum ecosystem.
